The 2017 UEFA Champions League Final will be the biggest event to have ever been staged in Wales – it will also be the biggest single sporting event in the world in 2017!

No major sporting event would be the same without the tremendous contribution of its volunteers and Cardiff 2017 will be no different.

We will require the enthusiasm and commitment of around 1000 volunteers, who will be known as ‘Champions’, to support a wide range of roles from Spectator Services and Accreditation, to Transport and Media and many more.

Frequently asked questions

When will volunteers be required?

The 2017 UEFA Women’s Champions League Final will be held on the 1st June 2017 and the 2017 UEFA Champions League Final will be held on the 3rd June 2017.

Volunteers will be required for both Finals with some roles required up to 10 days before competition dates.

Please see the availability requirement for each role detailed in the role descriptions. 

How many volunteers will you be recruiting for Cardiff 2017?

We will be recruiting approximately 1000 volunteers to be part of our team. We will be working with partners and organisations throughout Wales to ensure as many people as possible have the opportunity to apply. 

Who can apply?

If you’re 18 or over on the 1st May 2017 and eligible to volunteer in the UK, then we welcome your application. Depending on the role you apply for, further criteria may apply.

How do I apply?

What roles can I apply for?

Will there be recruitment events in Wales out with Cardiff?

Yes! We will be travelling throughout Wales to speak to as many people as possible about this amazing opportunity. We will also be able to assist people with their applications should they need any support. Dates and locations will be detailed on this website soon.

Will you have specialist roles as part of the volunteer programme?

There will be a number of roles that require specialist skills and experience and the Cardiff 2017 volunteer team will work with partners to fill these roles. However, there will be roles within these functional areas that will be released through the recruitment campaign starting in January 2017.

Can I volunteer for both the men’s and the women’s final?

Yes. You will be able to state at the application stage your availability and whether you can volunteer at both Finals.

Will this be an online application process only?

Yes. The application process will be online only. If you have any questions or require support in completing the application, please email volunteering@faw.co.uk and someone from the volunteer team will be in touch to assist.

Will you provide accommodation for volunteers?

We are unable to provide any accommodation for volunteers. However, we will do our best to advise of reasonable options which could enable you to be a part of the team.

Will you cover travel expenses for volunteers?

We are unable to cover travel costs for volunteers traveling to Cardiff.

I don’t live in Wales but want to volunteer, is this possible?

We expect most volunteers to be recruited from Wales however, we welcome applications from anyone living within the UK as well as overseas.

Please bear in mind that we are unable to cover any travel costs to Cardiff or accommodation in Cardiff. Please also ensure you meet the eligibility criteria of being 18 or over on the 1st May 2017 and are eligible to volunteer in the UK.

Will meals be provided when I am on shift?

Yes. All volunteers will be provided with free food and water during their shift.

I will need some extra support to volunteer – is this possible?

Yes. We want to support you throughout the full volunteer journey. There is a section on the application form where you can detail any extra support you would need.

Will I receive a uniform?

Yes, every volunteer will receive an Adidas uniform which you will get to keep. The uniform design and items will be launched soon!

Will I receive training ahead of Cardiff 2017?

All successful volunteers will be provided with the relevant general and role specific training which will enable you to fulfil your role. We will work with you to make the training dates and locations as convenient as possible.

How many shifts/hours am I expected to do?

The minimum shift commitment will vary depending on the role you are applying for. Please ensure you read the role descriptions so that you are aware of the requirements. There will be a variety of roles that require different time commitments which we hope will allow as many people as possible to take part.

Do I need to have experience in volunteering?

No. Anyone can apply to volunteer – even if this would be your first time. You will be given the chance to state in your application form why you would be suited to the role and detail any skills or experience you have.

What roles will you be recruiting for?

The volunteer team will be recruiting for a variety of different roles in many different functional areas. Detailed role descriptions will be available when applications open in January 2017. 

What are the next steps?

Why should I volunteer?

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in the delivery of the 2017 Champions League Final and to contribute to the one of the biggest sport events in the world.

The FAQs above don’t answer my question, what do I do now?

Will I receive tickets or be able to watch either of the Finals?

We will not be issuing any tickets. Fulfilling the role you are appointed to will be the main priority so it is not guaranteed that you will see any of the match either in the stadium or on television.

I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to volunteer at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. My role was to entertain and engage the fans waiting outside the stadium as well as directing fans and visitors around the City. I really enjoyed working in this role: it was creative, enjoyable and contributed to the atmosphere ahead of kick-off.

It was an invaluable opportunity to meet and work with new people, to challenge myself in previously unchartered territory and to be involved in the delivery of one of the largest sporting events in the world. In a similar way, I would encourage anybody to volunteer and be involved in this historic Champions League Final in Cardiff: the excitement and sense of satisfaction will be huge.

Volunteer Roles

Accreditation

The Accreditation Volunteers will issue personalised access cards to all working parties involved in the Finals, such as referees, players, officials, media, volunteers, service providers, suppliers and sponsors. They will welcome all those requesting accreditation, check the accuracy of data and verify applicants before distributing the personalised access cards.

Accreditation volunteers should be very comfortable working with computers and databases, have excellent customer service skills, good attention to detail and be able to remain calm at busy times. 

Ceremony Performer

The ceremonies team will create and implement a ceremony and entertainment programme at the stadium. The objective is to create a safe and joyful atmosphere in the stadium and provide a memorable experience for the fans.

Ceremony Volunteers will participate in the show as performers, they will train to learn the choreography and movements, manipulate props or elements of the show and perform live on the pitch minutes before the kick-off in front of thousands of fans and millions of television viewers

Ceremony performers have to be 16 years old as of 1st May 2017.

They should be pro-active and energetic and previous experience and specific skills are not required. We are looking for energetic and enthusiastic individuals who are willing to commit to performing in a stadium and have a smile on their face. We will teach the performers what they need to do.

 

Volunteer days / Shifts

  • Trainings and Rehearsal: From 15th of May until the 3rd of June (exact training times tbc)
  • Dress rehearsal on Wed 31st of May and Thu 1st of June (Times tbc)
  • Saturday 3 June: Show Day! Ready at the stadium from 2pm until 9pm

Champions Festival 

Volunteers at the Champions Festival will be responsible for supporting the Champions Festival team in the organisation of football games on mini-pitches and football-related activities at skills clinics.

They will assist with activities on the performance and entertainment stages, welcome visitors and provide information on all activities taking place. The volunteers will also be on hand to assist commercial partners and UEFA staff when required.

Champions Festival volunteers should be enthusiastic, committed and motivated, with good customer service and organisational skills.  

Event Transport

The event transport team is responsible for the planning and delivery of transport services. Volunteers will be based in the transportation office/fleet compound or as coordinators/welcome personnel at airports, hotels and stadiums. The aim is to help and support the customers and deliver a high-level transport service.

Event transport volunteers should have good knowledge of the city and its monuments, museums and events, good customer service and good organisational skills with strong attention to detail. They should be able to stay calm in a very stressful environment and be highly flexible at peak times (early morning/late at night). They should have a valid driving license.

Hospitality 

Hospitality Production manages the development, implementation and delivery of different hospitality programmes targeted at VIPs, sponsors and the corporate sector. Hospitality production is also responsible for delivering catering services for staff, media representatives, volunteers, youth programmes and match officials (teams, referees and doping control doctors) throughout the tournament. As members of the hospitality team, dedicated volunteers will help with the organisational preparations and the support the overall operation to ensure the best possible guest experience.

Hospitality volunteers should have good organisational skills with strong attention to detail. They should have outstanding service mentality, be very reliable, flexible and have excellent communication skills.

Logistics Operations

Logistic Operations is dedicated to the set-up and pack-up of the venue and is the first and last team onsite. The volunteers will need to assist the Warehouse Manager in the preparation, organisation and delivery of a range of materials across the stadium and to other key areas in the city based on a schedule put together on site.

Logistics volunteers should be reliable, have good attention to detail, good knowledge of the City and should be willing and able to lift and move items stored in the warehouse.  Volunteers should be in possession of a valid driving licence and van driving experience is a plus as is previous warehouse experience.

Marketing & Commercial Operations

The Commercial Operations team's objective is to successfully deliver all on-site sponsor rights to the highest standard. Volunteers will support the Marketing Operations team by fulfilling office duties, monitoring the advertising-free zones and assisting sponsors with on-site activation programmes, including the Youth Programmes (Player Escorts, Flag bearers and match ball carriers) as well as other on-site promotional activities around the stadium and Champions Festival. Volunteers in this area assist the Venue Marketing Manager and/or Coordinator.

Volunteers in this team are required to be dedicated, willing and proactive. A marketing background is seen as a plus as well as being able to be flexible in your work environment. 

Match Operations

Volunteers will assist the match director with the preparation and running of each match, including the official training sessions the day before the match. They will help with the setting-up of the dressing rooms, competition areas and match material. Volunteers will also take on various administrative tasks, including preparing and, if appropriate, attending meetings. The project’s main task is to organise the match and all services related to the sporting aspects to the highest international level and according to UEFA regulations.

Volunteers should be reliable, committed, motivated, friendly, polite and courteous. They should also act in a professional and discrete manner.

Media Operations

The Media Services and Operations team provides facilities, information, accreditation and booking services to the international media expected to cover UEFA Champions League Final. The stadium will have its own media centre, media tribune, press conference room, mixed zone and pitch side positions, providing journalists, photographers and broadcasters with the best possible working conditions. Volunteers in this area assist the Venue Media Operations Manager and/or Coordinator.

Media Operations volunteers should be reliable and flexible, be able to communicate in English and be able to walk reasonable distances and deal with the physical demands of the job.

Spectator Services

The spectator services team will be the first point of contact for many people travelling to Cardiff for the UEFA Champions League Finals. Volunteers will be required to provide information on the event and deal with a variety of different enquiries and requests.

The spectator services team will provide visitors and residents of the City a warm Welsh welcome as well as directing them around the City, to the Stadium or Champions Festival.

Spectator services volunteers should be reliable, friendly, helpful and committed to delivering a high level of customer service. Fluent in English is essential and knowledge of additional languages would be desirable. Good local knowledge would also be desirable.

Technical Services Volunteer 

The Technical Services and Overlay project manages the planning, provision and implementation of services and temporary infrastructure as requested by internal and, to some extent, also external stakeholders to bridge the gap between the existing conditions at the venues and the greater requirements of a major sports event. Sub-projects within this area relate to power supply, water supply, temperature control, waste management, sound system and giant screens, venue TV/venue radio/frequencies, and temporary infrastructure.

Technical Services volunteers should have good communication skills, good attention to detail, be responsible and well organised. 

Ticketing

Ticketing volunteers are an essential part of the delivery of the ticketing project.

Ticketing volunteers will be responsible for checking that all the seats in the stadium correspond to the ticketing system and that all seat labels are correct. They will assist with setting up the ticket collection point, support UEFA staff with last-minute ticket requests and/or the collection process and verify that signage is correct.

Ticketing volunteers should have good administrative skills, show attention to detail and have communication skills.

TV Operations

The TV Operation team, provides and organise the best possible working conditions for the Broadcasters and Host Broadcaster. Volunteers in this area will assist the Production Manager and/or Coordinator for all logistic matters.

Volunteers in this team should have excellent organisational skills, be proactive and energetic and a quick learner with common sense and be fit enough to deal with the physical demands of the job.

Venue Management

Venue Management Volunteers will support the organisation of the final by executing various services as required - troubleshooting, support different departments, delivering material to various locations, working closely with the office manager and office Volunteers, shopping, restocking office materials, taking pictures, etc.

Volunteers should be reliable and flexible with good organisational skills. A driving licence is helpful but not essential.

VIP Services 

VIP services are responsible for guest management, welcome services and protocol matters for the VIP guests attending the match. Guest management operations are carried out at airports, hotels and stadiums, where national and international guests from the world of sports and politics will be welcomed.

Volunteering with the VIP team will require good organisational skills with strong attention to detail.

Outstanding customer service is a must as well as excellent communication skills in English. Volunteers should be able to stay calm in a stressful environment and highly flexible at peak times and have good knowledge of the city. They should be energetic and able to handle the physical demands of the job (the role may involve ‘running’ tickets from one place to another)

Volunteer Management

All volunteer-related activities will be planned and implemented by the Volunteer Management department. This sector will look after the volunteers and ensure that everything runs smoothly. It will also deal with training, job allocation, the volunteer centre, catering and the volunteer culture.

Volunteers will assist with preparing uniforms, welcome letters, etc. for each Volunteer on their first working day, take pictures for the website and Volunteer video and help preparing volunteer diplomas and gifts for the Support Team thank-you party.

Volunteers should be very reliable with strong organisational skills and a precise working style.
