Coleman reflects on World Cup disappointment

“We just came up a bit short,” said Chris Coleman, who was reflecting on yesterday’s 1-0 defeat against the Republic of Ireland in Cardiff as Welsh hopes of World Cup qualification were ended.

“We got frustrated and started rushing things. I have to give Martin O’Neill a big pat on the back, they came here with a game plan.”

Republic of Ireland achieved second place in the Group D standings behind Serbia and booked themselves a place in next month’s play-offs.

“It's another campaign where we have taken it all the way,” added Coleman. “It's tough, it hurts, but that's life. We never really created enough, we lacked that bit of imagination.

“They defended well, and we didn't really look like scoring. We didn't lack passion, we just couldn't break them down.

“There's disappointed players and staff and there's a nation in mourning. I can feel how much they're hurting, but they should be proud.”
