Greenfield progressed into Round 2 with a 3-2 win over Llandudno Albion. Wayne Edwards scored a brace – one from the penalty spot – and Shaun Beck added a third in the first half. Albion clawed two back in the second period through Alan Davies and Ricky Jones, but it was too little, too late.
In another all-Huws Gray Alliance tie, Gresford knocked out Denbigh Town 3-0 with Jake Eyre, Michael Latham and Owen Roberts scoring.
Holyhead Hotspur ended Dyffyn Nantlle Vale’s hopes with a 3-0 win. Mel McGuinness scored twice and Deion Evans also found the net for the Huws Gray Alliance outfit. Mold Alex of the same League also progressed thanks to an Andrea Economedies double, adding to Lee Jones and Rhys Nash’s goals in a 4-0 win over Llanberis.
In the south, Rhys Griffiths enjoyed his first taste of Welsh Cup management with a 3-1 win over AFC Porth. A Welsh Cup winner with Llanelli; Griffiths watched his side score twice in the opening 17 minutes through Kyron Tolland and Joe Hopkins before Nathan Doe pulled one back for the Rhondda-outfit. Adam Carpenter’s 65th minute effort settled matters though.
Two other Rhondda sides crashed out in Round 1 as Cambrian & Clydach were the victims of a shock as Trefelin from two league’s below their hosts enjoyed an excellent 3-1 away win. Whilst Blaenrhonnda were eliminated by Undy Athletic 3-0. That leaves Ton Pentre flying the Rhondda flag as Lee Phillips’ side downed FAW Trophy Champions Abergavenny Town 4-2 at Ynys Park. Leon Jacka scored a double for the Bulldogs with Sam Small and Lewis Hitchcock also scoring. A Craig Norman double for Town was just consolation.
Welsh League Division 3 side Bridgend Street were denied a shock win with penalty shootout heartache against Goytre FC of division 1. Ex-Port Talbot and Carmarthen midfielder Paul Fowler’s 34th minute goal looked like it may have settled things in 90 minutes, but Lewis Sommers equalised with a minute remaining. Two more former Port Talbot and Carmarthen Town players’ scored in extra-time with Sam O’Sullivan giving the Gwent-side the lead in extra-time before Jeff White restored parity for the hosts. The match went to penalties and Goytre progressed 5-4.
It was an easier afternoon for 2007 runners-up Afan Lido who beat South Wales Alliance side Pontyclun 4-1 at the Marstons Stadium. A Kieran Cullen hat-trick as well as a Ben Thomas opener ensured the hosts were always in the driving seat. Harry Flint scored for the minnows.
Guilsfield, Llanelli and Caernarfon Town all progressed before today, whilst Monmouth Town host Brecon Corries in the last of the weekend’s ties.
The draw for Round 2 will take place at 6pm on Monday, 3 October exclusively live on FAW TV via the FAW Facebook page.
