Narrow loss for South Wales on UEFA Regions Cup MD2

Amateurs FYR Macedonia earned their first points of the UEFA Regions Cup Preliminary Round Group with a 2-1 win over South Wales FA at Jenner Park.

Second half goals from Antonio Lukarov and Toni Mirchevski were enough to seal victory for the visitors.

Region of Gothenburg v Amateurs FYR Macedonia

Sunday 10 June, 16:00 at Cyncoed Campus, Cardiff.

Wales had initially had a superb chance to take the lead but Christopher Colvin-Owens' effort was blocked, before Adam Jenkins snapped his shot over Mirza Durakovikj's bar.

Vladimir Zhoglev then played a sublime ball in towards Ivan Galevski, but his effort was dealt with by Stephen Price, the Wales stopper having a fine start to the game in the wet conditions.

Going into the second-half, it was the visitors who took the lead courtesy of a splendid team move, which was slotted home by substitute Lukarov.

Lukarov then turned provider as he played in Toni Mirchevski, who polished off another good team move for the visitors with what turned out to be the winner.

Christopher Quick did score a late consolation for South Wales, but they couldn’t find an equaliser in a game where they were second-best for most parts.

It leaves the home side needing a win over Evia Region on Sunday in the final game of the group to guarantee at least a second place finish, which may be enough to seal qualification to the Intermediate Round. All winners from the three Preliminary Round groups progress, along with the two best placed runners up.

Evia currently sit top of the group on four points, but only just held on to a point in their 2-2 draw against Region of Gothenburg at Cyncoed.

Evia scored with the game’s first shot on goal. Andreas Kourtis took the ball down the line and squared it to Dimitros Aggelatos who tapped home from close range.

Aggelatos almost doubled his tally, but he was denied by Emil Kecevic as Idomeneas Anastasiou crossed the ball to his feet.

Panagiotis Karantakis doubled Evia's lead after the break when Gothenburg failed to clear their lines, hitting a half-turn volley past Kecevic to put them two goals to the good.

Gothenburg clawed one back through Henos Araya who hit a thunderous strike past Dimitrios Ntoumanis after picking up a loose ball.

They then pulled level with only four minutes to go, Kassim Coaney heading home for the late equaliser. Araya had the chance to score the winner, but his low drive shot was saved by Ntoumanis, and the game finished level.
