This year’s JD Welsh Cup Final between Aberystwyth Town and Connah’s Quay Nomads will be played at Newtown AFC’s Latham Park.

JD Welsh Cup Final 2018

Aberystwyth Town v Connah’s Quay Nomads

  • Latham Park, Newtown
  • Sunday 6 May, KO 14:45
  • Tickets - £8/£4/£1

The 131st Final will be played on Sunday 6 May at 14:45, and will be broadcast live on S4C and streamed online on the S4C website and Sgorio Facebook page.

This will be the fifth time that the town has played host to Welsh football’s showpiece event. Latham Park last hosted the Welsh Cup Final in 2015, when the Robins were denied what would have been a famous win on their own turf by The New Saints.

Bangor City and Rhyl were winners at Latham in 2008 and 2004 respectively, whilst the only other Final to be played in the town back in 1900 saw Aberystwyth record their one and only JD Welsh Cup win to date.

The pairing guarantees history will be made, either in the form of the Seasiders ending their 118 year wait for a second trophy, or Nomads winning the Cup for the first time, having lost in their only final appearance in 1998.

Both sides have had tough routes to the Final. Connah’s Quay defeated current JD Welsh Premier League Champions, The New Saints, and Bangor City in addition to Cwmbran Celtic and Porthmadog. Aberystwyth meanwhile knocked out last year’s Cup winners Bala Town in Round 3, before seeing off further top flight opposition in Cardiff Met, Carmarthen Town and Newtown.

The two sides last met in the competition in the Second Round back in 2006/07, Adam Dickinson and Marc Limbert helping Nomads to a 2-1 win.

Andrew Howard, FAW Head of Competitions, said: “We are delighted to return to Latham Park in Newtown for the 2018 JD Welsh Cup Final. The club were excellent hosts in the 2015 Final and the venue showcases the very best of facilities in mid-Wales. We are hoping to create a really exciting event for the fans of Aberystwyth and Connah’s Quay to remember for a long time.

“We also hope that the local communities in Newtown and throughout Powys will also embrace the occasion. The JD Welsh Cup is a fantastic competition that the FAW is very proud of and I am sure that everybody who attends the 131stFinal will have a memorable day out at great value for money.”

Howard Ellis, Chairman of Newtown AFC, said: “We are very proud of our club facilities and we extend a warm welcome to the finalists Aberystwyth and Connah’s Quay, their directors and supporters. It will not only be a great occasion for our club, but also for Newtown itself.”
