Wales Women's Under-17s succumb to Norway defeat

Wales were beaten 8-1 by Norway in their opening UEFA EURO Women's U17 Championship Elite Round match at Otoka Stadium.

It was a frustrating opening match to the Elite Round campaign for Wales, as Jayne Ludlow's side saw her team slump to a 8-1 defeat in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Jenny Olsen opened the scoring on the 3rd minute followed by a second on the 11th minute from Naomi Griffin.

Wales' first chance came on the 16th minute with a shot on target from Wales captain, Bronwen Thomas but her efforts were shot straight into the hands of the keeper.

On the 22nd minute, midfielder Ffion Morgan intercepted on the half way line, driving the ball up field to take a long distance shot at goal that glided over the Norwegian keeper and found the back of the net.

Norway quickly responsed with a second goal from Olsen, bringing the score 3-1 before half-time.

Norway dominated in the second-half with numerous goals from Olsen, Griffin, Terland and Berkley scoring in quick succession to make it 8-1 to Norway before the final whistle was blown.

Wales will face Denmark on Wednesday 22 March in their second Elite Round fixture at Otoka Stadium.

Like Norway, Denmark also claimed top spot in their qualifying group with a perfect record, and manager Danny Jung will be keen for his side to progress past the Elite round after exiting the competition at this stage in each of the last three years. Striker Dajan Heshemi was the leading scorer in qualifying with three goals in as many games, but the side conceded goals against Slovakia and Switzerland in process.

A 4-1 defeat against Austria was the only dent in Bosnia and Herzegovina's qualifying record, but the side did enough to qualify for the Elite round as runners-up in Group 11 and now have the advantage of hosting the next stage of the competition. Both Maja Hrelja and Andrea Gavric scored three goals each for Ilija Lucic's side during the qualifying stage, but having conceded heavily against Austria there will be concerns over their defence.
