Setting Your Green Goals
What Are ‘Green Goals’?
Green Goals help turn good intentions into practical action. They give your Club something clear to work towards and help track progress over time. It’s ok if you are not sure yet what Green Goals to set, you can come back to this section once you explore the Together Greener Topics.
Green Goals should be:
- Relevant to your club and facilities.
- Realistic and achievable with the time and resources available.
- Focused on actions you can influence directly.
- Reviewed and updated as your club progresses.
Start by agreeing on two Green Goals rather than trying to tackle everything at once. For those Club’s who are further along on their sustainability journey, there are templates throughout the topics you can use to set more goals and detailed actions, but as a minimum, Clubs should aim to set two Green Goals.
These goals might relate to reducing energy use, improving waste management, protecting green spaces around your ground or encouraging more sustainable travel. Your Together Greener Team should involve others in setting these goals where possible. This could include players, coaches or volunteers sharing ideas or highlighting issues they see regularly at the Club. To do this, you could survey Club members to gather ideas on what actions the Club could take and to invite Club members to get involved.
Download the ‘Club Member Survey Template’ below.

If you do not have clear goals to set at the start, you can explore the topics, and through using the various audits in each section, you will identify some areas of improvement that you can turn into Green Goals. Once agreed, Green Goals should be written down, shared within the Club and revisited regularly. Celebrating small successes helps build confidence and motivation.
You can use the ‘Green Goals’ template below to record and monitor your Green Goals.
Top Tips
- Even small actions are important. Actions that are easy to plan and implement, that are visible and that deliver quick wins will build morale and momentum.
- For further Club consultation, consider conducting an in-person consultation – such as organising a pop-up stand or deploying a survey team at a Club match or training session or running an information evening.

Adopting A Green Goals Charter
Your Club should produce a simple sustainability charter setting out the Club’s sustainability commitments. This could reference the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, the sustainability strategy of the FAW and your Club’s own Green Goals. The wording of the charter can be set by the Club and the Together Greener Team.
This charter should be published on the Club website and shared through Club social media channels, as well as displayed on the walls of the Club facilities where applicable. If possible, the Green Goals Charter should be endorsed and signed by a senior member of the Club committee, executive or management. An example of a draft charter which could be adopted or adapted for your Club’s use can be downloaded below.
