Cymru held in Slovakia as Moore scores first goal

It was frustration for Ryan Giggs’ team in Trnava as Kieffer Moore saw his first goal on his first start for Cymru cancelled out by a second half volley from Slovakia’s Juraj Kucka.

Slovakia created the first real chance of the match when Robert Mak went through on goal but Ethan Ampadu slid in to block the shot and spur Cymru on to get a foothold in the game.

Having survived another scare when Slovakia captain Marek Hamšik found Dávid Hancko who had his header saved well by Wayne Hennessey, Cymru went on the offensive and took their chance.

Moments after Gareth Bale hit the crossbar with a header, Cymru maintained the pressure on their hosts. After the ball was sent out wide to the left to meet Dan James, he took it to the by-line before cutting a high cross back inside where Moore jumped to head the ball into the net for 1-0.

Slovakia came out in the second half with purpose and they soon capitalised on the pressure they had imposed on Cymru with a goal of their own. After the ball was crossed deep into the box, Connor Roberts dropped back to head it out of the area where Kucka was in ample space to volley past Hennessey.

There were many positives to take from the game as Cymru now look towards Sunday (13 October) when they meet Croatia in Cardiff.

Post-match Giggs said: “I’m satisfied. I thought it was a really good game. Either team could have won it. We’ve come away from home and it’s a good point.”

On his goal scorer, the Cymru boss added: “Kieffer was a handful and I’m really happy he got the goal that he deserved. As a result, we’re still in it and now we have a better head-to-head than Slovakia.”

Moore was delighted to have got off the goal scoring mark for Cymru and said: “I believe in football you have to take every opportunity you get and to get the goal was the stuff dreams are made of.”

He also believes there’s still everything to play for in the group, saying: “If we keep being positive we can still qualify but we probably need to take something from every game.”
