Cymru have reached the UEFA #WU17EURO Elite Round for the second year running after finishing as one of the best third-placed teams in the Qualifying Round.
Cymru 0-3 Russia
Cymru 0-0 Denmark
Cymru 1-0 North Macedonia
Matches played in September 2019
Lauren Smith’s side played their qualifying round matches out in Denmark in September but had to wait until every group had played their matches to confirm the qualification. Cymru started their campaign with a disappointing 3-0 loss to Russia but the youngsters bounced back a few days later with an impressive 0-0 draw against the group’s top seeds, Denmark. The third placed finish was confirmed in the final group match as Mary McAteer’s goal ensured a 1-0 win against North Macedonia.
Two of the players that represented Cymru, Carrie Jones and Maria Francis-Jones have been rewarded for their performances with a callup to Jayne Ludlow’s senior team for the match against Northern Ireland on Tuesday 12 November.
It’s very pleasing for the players, they worked hard and they deserved it. After the first game against Russia the girls bounced back very well, correcting their errors and we competed very well against a very good team in Denmark. I’m delighted we’ve managed to reach the elite round for a second successive year with this age group.
The draw for the elite round will be held on 22 November 2019 at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. Matches will be played in Spring 2020.
