Kayleigh Green scored twice in a magnificent 3-0 victory against Russia to reclaim Wales’ spot at the top of their group in a lively FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying match.
WALES 3-0 RUSSIA
FIFA WOMEN'S WORLD CUP QUALIFIER
- Tuesday, 12 June
- Newport Stadium, Newport
Natasha Harding joined Green on the scoresheet and Wales’ strong defensive record continued with yet another clean sheet in front of a sold-out crowd at Newport Stadium. They are yet to concede a goal in this qualifying campaign.
The first half proved lively and evenly contested. There were chances created by Green, Ward and Rowe but the Russian defence stayed strong throughout. Russia also tested Wales at times but failed to secure any clear-cut chances, with Laura O’Sullivan proving yet again to be a strong force in goal.
Wales took their energy levels up a notch at the beginning of the second half. The first goal came 3 minutes into the second half with Rachel Rowe managing to hold up possession on the edge of the box before crossing to Ward. Ward scuffed the ball wide but Green was at the end of it to score the first goal.
Wales continued to put the pressure on Russia and the second goal came fifteen minutes later. Ward assisted yet again for Green as she dinked the ball over the keeper’s head to the back of the net. At this point Wales were cruising and Kayleigh Green was in fine form. The third goal came in the 68th minute, with Green’s pass reaching Harding who forced a save from Todua before finding the back of the net as the ball bounced back to her feet.
A fantastic team performance puts Wales back at the top of the group before facing England in their final qualifying match on August 31.
