Rowe scores winner on Cymru return

Jayne Ludlow’s Cymru continued their unbeaten run in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2021 qualifying campaign after a late Rachel Rowe goal secured a 1-0 away win against Belarus.

Rowe, on her return from a lengthy ACL injury, was one of two changes to the side that drew 2-2 to Northern Ireland. The second change was debutant Anna Filbey, slotting in to the centre of the defence in place of regular captain Sophie Ingle.

Chances were few and far between in the first half with neither goalkeeper really tested. Cymru’s best chance of the half could have come from a penalty but the referee decided Natasha Harding’s fall in the box did not warrant a foul despite contact from the opposition goalkeeper. With minutes to go before the half time whistle, Cymru saw another fine chance go amiss as Rhiannon Roberts’ header from a corner was tipped over the crossbar by Voskobovich.

Both teams started the second half in a lively manner, but it was Belarus that had one of the best chances to take the lead. A mistake by the Cymru defence in conceding possession led to a one on one for Scherbachenia against Laura O’Sullivan but the striker’s shot sailed over the crossbar.

With Cymru piling on the pressure, Natasha Harding’s curling shot from distance hit the far post, but Elise Hughes’ follow up finish was adjudged offside. Minutes later however, it was Cymru’s time for celebration. A sloppy clearance from a Cymru corner by Belarus saw the ball land at Rachel Rowe’s feet. The full back made no mistake with a stunning finish, finding the inside of the far post from an acute angle on the left-hand side.

With Norway beating the Faroe Islands 12-0, Cymru will now take on Northern Ireland on 12 November to continue their quest for qualification.

It's a tough place to come to, we had chances and we got the three points, so I'm happy. I'm really pleased for Rachel, it was a great performance from her. The whole squad stepped up to the mark today and it was great to get the clean sheet too.
