The draws for the 2019/20 UEFA #U17EURO championship elite round and the 2020/21 UEFA #U17EURO championship qualifying round took place at UEFA HQ today (3 December).
#U17EURO 2019/20 Elite Round
Matches to be held in March 2020
For the 2019/20 elite round, Cymru have been drawn alongside Italy, Poland and Montenegro in group 2. Poland were selected as hosts and the matches will be played 25-31 March. The eight elite round group winners and seven runners-up with the best records against teams first and third in their pool will join Estonia in the finals from 21 May to 6 June.
Richard Williams’ side reached the elite round after beating Slovenia (1-0) and Kosovo (4-1) in the qualifying round. Cymru also had a narrow loss against top seeds and hosts the Netherlands (2-1).
In the 2020/21 qualifying round, Cymru will face France, Scotland and Andorra in group 13. Scotland have been selected as hosts for the mini-tournament and matches will take place on 30 October – 4 November.
The top two in each qualifying round group and four third-placed teams with the best record against the leading pair in their section join the Netherlands and Spain in the elite round in spring 2021, which will then produce Cyprus' 15 finals opponents.
It’ll be three different challenges, but we can’t wait. We haven’t faced Italy or Montenegro before, but we know slightly more about Poland as we have a tradition of playing them in the younger age groups. Hopefully we’ll have some preparation days in early March to get the players together, get them ready to compete and help further their development.
