Establishing a ‘Together Greener Team’
What is a ‘Together Greener Team’?
A Together Greener team is a small group of people who help guide and support sustainability action within your Club.
Each Club should aim to have at least two ‘Together Greener Team’ members. For many Clubs, a team of two to four people works well and allows tasks to be shared without placing pressure on any one individual.
Before setting up a new group, consider what is already in place. Your Club may already have committee members, subgroups or volunteers involved in areas such as facilities, safeguarding, community or wellbeing. These existing roles may already cover some sustainability activity and can form part of your Together Greener Team.
When building your team, try to:
- Involve people from different parts of the Club, such as committee members, coaches, volunteers, players or parents.
- Look beyond the usual volunteers; sustainability activity can attract people who may not normally be involved in Club administration.
- Value different ages and experiences, including younger members and long-standing Cub volunteers, ensuring safeguarding guidance is always followed.
- Be flexible; people may want to help with specific actions rather than commit to everything.
- Identify experience, expertise and enthusiasm within the Club with the intention of involving these interested Club members in Green Goals planning and activities.
Some Clubs find it helpful to involve people who already spend time at the Club, such as parents or guardians, during training sessions, as this can make meetings and planning easier.

Agreeing on Shared Values
Shared values help guide how your Together Greener Team works together and how sustainability is embedded across the Club. They create a common understanding of why the Club is taking action and how decisions are made.
Clubs make the most progress when sustainability is linked to existing Club values such as respect, teamwork, fairness and pride in representing the Club and community.
When establishing your Together Greener Team, take a short amount of time to agree on a small set of shared values. These do not need to be new or separate from your Club values. In many cases, they already exist and simply need to be reflected through a sustainability lens.
Shared values might include:
- Taking responsibility for the impact the Club has on people and the environment.
- Working together and supporting each other to make positive change.
- Being inclusive and welcoming different ideas, experiences and voices.
- Taking practical action rather than striving for perfection.
- Thinking long-term about the future of the club and its community.
Agreeing on shared values helps:
- Build trust and shared ownership within the Together Greener Team.
- Encourage consistent decision-making.
- Support positive behaviours across the Club.
- Make sustainability feel part of the Club culture, not an add-on.
These values can be revisited over time and used to guide conversations, priorities and Green Goals. Some Clubs choose to display them in clubhouses or include them in communications to remind members why ‘Together Greener’ matters.
Shared values also provide a strong foundation for action and help ensure sustainability becomes part of how the club operates, both on and off the pitch.
The role of the Together Greener Team is not to do everything themselves. Their role is to coordinate activity, encourage others to get involved and help embed sustainability into how the Club operates.
You can use the ‘Shared Values’ activity template to support you in your discussions.
Top Tips
- The Club Mapping activities can provide opportunities to raise awareness and recruit Together Greener Team members.
- Benefit from intergenerational skills and perspectives – consider recruiting members across a range of ages to the Together Greener Team, and in the case of youth members, ensure child safeguarding measures are adhered to at all times.
- Encourage your Club to include sustainability as an agenda item for club committee meetings, in annual reports or organise periodic updates from the Together Greener Team to the Club committee or management.
- The Together Greener Teams can be an opportunity for Club members or supporters not participating in playing, management or Club administration to get involved in Club activities.
