Management
Introduction
Delivering sustainability is about more than reducing energy use or increasing recycling. It requires good leadership, clear planning and a shared commitment across the whole Club.
The Management topic focuses on embedding sustainability into everyday decision-making, helping Clubs develop the knowledge, confidence and structures needed to create lasting change. Whether your Club is just starting its sustainability journey or looking to build on existing work, good management helps turn ideas into meaningful action.
By developing a sustainability strategy, creating an action plan, engaging volunteers and members, measuring progress and celebrating success, Clubs can ensure sustainability becomes part of their culture rather than a one-off project.
This topic brings together practical guidance to help Clubs lead sustainability effectively, access funding, engage partners, measure their impact and continuously improve over time.
Use the steps below to explore this topic in more detail and support your Club to turn ideas into action. Click into each step and work through them in order, using the guidance and resources provided to support your Club. You do not need to complete everything at once; take action at a pace that works for your Club and return to the steps as your Together Greener journey develops.

Assess
Strong sustainability starts with understanding where your Club is today.
The ‘ASSESS’ step helps Clubs evaluate their current approach to sustainability, leadership and environmental management. It encourages Clubs to reflect on existing policies, responsibilities, knowledge, partnerships and progress while identifying opportunities to strengthen their overall approach.
Assessment does not require specialist knowledge. Simple self-assessments, discussions with committee members, volunteers and facility managers can provide valuable insight into where the Club is performing well and where improvements can be made.
Resources in this section will help Clubs:
- Assess their overall sustainability maturity.
- Understand current governance, leadership and responsibilities.
- Review climate awareness and organisational readiness.
- Identify strengths, gaps and opportunities for improvement.
- Establish a baseline from which progress can be measured.
Identify
Once your Club understands its current position, the next step is identifying opportunities to strengthen sustainability across the organisation.
This stage encourages Clubs to think strategically and consider how sustainability can become part of everyday decision-making, planning and Club culture. It also supports Clubs to identify practical actions that build long-term resilience while supporting the wider goals of the Together Greener Programme.
Clubs may identify actions such as:
- Developing a Club Sustainability Strategy.
- Creating a Green Team to lead sustainability initiatives.
- Developing a Carbon Reduction Plan.
- Measuring and understanding the Club’s carbon footprint.
- Identifying funding opportunities for sustainability projects.
- Building partnerships with local organisations, schools and community groups.
- Raising climate awareness amongst members and volunteers.
- Developing education and engagement opportunities.
- Planning sustainable events and matchdays.
- Creating systems to monitor, report and celebrate progress.
This section includes practical guidance, templates and examples that can be adapted by Clubs of all sizes.

Act
The ACT step focuses on turning plans into meaningful action.
Good sustainability management is about creating simple systems that help Clubs make informed decisions, involve the right people and deliver continuous improvement over time. Rather than trying to do everything at once, Clubs are encouraged to prioritise achievable actions that reflect their capacity, resources and ambitions.
This section supports clubs to:
- Develop a Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan.
- Assign roles and responsibilities through a Green Team.
- Set realistic sustainability objectives and targets.
- Develop carbon reduction actions.
- Identify external funding and partnership opportunities.
- Improve sustainability knowledge across the Club.
- Embed sustainability into Club planning and decision-making.
- Monitor progress and review performance regularly.
Small, consistent actions, supported by good planning and leadership, can deliver significant environmental, social and financial benefits over time.
Communicate
Communicating sustainability helps build awareness, encourage participation and inspire positive action throughout the Club and wider community.
Sharing your Club’s sustainability journey demonstrates leadership, celebrates volunteers and helps members understand how their actions contribute to wider environmental goals. Effective communication also strengthens relationships with partners, sponsors, funders and local communities.
This section provides guidance and resources to help Clubs:
- Communicate sustainability plans and achievements.
- Promote campaigns and environmental initiatives.
- Share progress through newsletters, websites and social media.
- Celebrate volunteers and sustainability champions.
- Inspire members to get involved.
- Demonstrate the Club’s commitment to Together Greener and the FAW Sustainability Strategy.
Clear, consistent communication helps make sustainability part of everyday Club culture.
Review
Sustainability is an ongoing journey of learning and continuous improvement.
The REVIEW step encourages Clubs to reflect on the actions they have taken, celebrate successes and identify opportunities to improve further. Regular review helps maintain momentum and ensures sustainability remains an active part of Club planning and decision-making.
Clubs are encouraged to:
- Review progress against their Sustainability Action Plan.
- Monitor environmental, social and financial outcomes.
- Measure progress towards carbon reduction and sustainability goals.
- Gather feedback from members, volunteers and partners.
- Update priorities as the Club develops.
- Share achievements and lessons learned with the wider football community.
Regular review enables Clubs to build on their successes, demonstrate impact and continue contributing towards a more sustainable future for Welsh football.
Case Study
North Wales Dragons FC

Embedding sustainability into Club management, football and community impact
Since its inception in 2009, North Wales Dragons FC has embedded sustainability principles into the way it manages and operates as a community football Club. Its approach aligns with the FAW’s sustainability strategy, the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, recognising that football can contribute to a healthier, more equal, resilient and connected Wales. Through initiatives supporting physical and mental wellbeing, social inclusion, education, local charities and environmental awareness, the Dragons use football as a platform to create positive change both on and off the pitch.
The Club’s approach demonstrates how sustainability can be integrated into everyday Club activity rather than treated as a standalone project. The Dragons promote diversity, inclusion and the Welsh language, support physical and mental health, engage with local organisations and educational partners, and make responsible use of facilities by renting a football field from a local college. Their sustainable management approach also includes player contributions and car-sharing initiatives, helping to keep participation accessible while reducing carbon emissions. These activities reflect the wider FAW strategic focus areas of Croeso, Health, Facilities, Team, Partnerships, Structures and Decarbonisation.
The Dragons have also embraced their role as environmental advocates, including participation in the United Nations’ Football for the Goals initiative and promoting sustainable practices within the Club. Their experience demonstrates that community football Clubs can make a meaningful contribution to the wellbeing of current and future generations by combining sporting ambition with community responsibility and environmental stewardship. By continuing to strengthen partnerships, embed sustainable practices and align their activities with the FAW’s sustainability ambitions, the North Wales Dragons provide an example of how Clubs can use football to create a lasting positive legacy for their communities and for Wales.
