Together Greener
PLAY TODAY, PROTECT TOMORROW
Introduction
Football in Wales is built on community. Our Clubs are places where people come together, learn, grow and belong. They are also places where small everyday decisions can make a real difference to our environment, our communities and future generations.
The FAW sustainability strategy underpins our vision for a global, local Cymru. It recognises that football has a responsibility, and a unique opportunity, to protect what we have today while helping to create a better tomorrow. This means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.
Sustainability is not about perfection or doing everything at once. It is about taking positive, practical action, big or small, and embedding long-term thinking into the way football operates at every level. From national teams to grassroots Clubs, every part of the football ecosystem has a role to play.
Guided by the Well-being of Future Generations Wales Act, the FAW is committed to improving Wales’ environmental, social, cultural and economic well-being. We want football to be a force for good locally and globally, inspiring positive change and supporting stronger, more resilient communities. Clubs sit at the heart of this ambition. They are trusted spaces, powered by volunteers, players and supporters who care deeply about their club and their community.
The Together Greener Programme has been created to support Clubs to take simple, effective sustainability actions that make sense for them, reduce impact, save money where possible, and help build a more sustainable future for Welsh football.

What is the Together Greener Programme?
The FAW’s Together Greener Programme is a practical sustainability programme designed specifically for football Clubs in Wales. The Programme aligns with UEFA sustainability guidance, the Well-being of Future Generations Act and best practice across European football. The Programme will also evolve over time based on Club feedback, learning and new guidance.
Its purpose is simple. To help Clubs take achievable steps to reduce their environmental impact, engage their members and communities, and build sustainability into everyday Club activity.
The programme recognises that Clubs vary in size, resources and capacity, and that sustainability needs to be flexible, accessible and relevant at every level of the game.
The programme is structured around six key topic areas where Clubs can have the greatest impact:

Each topic follows the same simple five-step approach:

The programme also supports Clubs to:
- Establish a Together Green team within the Club.
- Set clear Green Goals that are realistic and meaningful.
This approach helps Clubs understand where they are now, decide what matters most, take action at a pace that suits them, and track progress over time.
The Together Greener Programme is a supportive framework that encourages continuous improvement, shared learning and collaboration across the Welsh football community.
By taking part, Clubs become part of a growing movement working together for a greener, stronger and more sustainable game for Wales, its people and future generations.
What are the benefits?
Taking part in the FAW Together Greener Programme helps Clubs become more sustainable in ways that are practical, affordable and relevant to everyday Club life.
Most importantly, Together Greener supports Clubs to take action at a pace that works for them, focusing on simple steps that add up to meaningful change over time.

Save money and use resources more efficiently.
Simple actions to reduce energy, water use and waste can lower running costs and free up money to reinvest in the club and grassroots football.

Stronger Clubs and facilities.
Taking care of pitches, buildings and surrounding spaces helps improve facilities, protect assets and support long-term Club sustainability.

Engage players, volunteers and supporters.
Together Greener encourages more people to get involved, creating shared ownership and strengthening the sense of community around the Club.

Support funding, compliance and future requirements.
Demonstrating positive environmental action can support funding applications, licensing/accreditation/legal requirements and future sustainability expectations.

Support health, wellbeing and enjoyment of football
Sustainable Clubs create better places to play, watch and volunteer. Greener actions can support physical and mental well-being, helping everyone enjoy football in healthier, safer environments.

Positive impact on local communities.
Clubs can play a visible role in protecting local environments, improving green spaces and promoting positive behaviour beyond the pitch.

Build Club reputation and leadership.
Being part of Together Greener shows leadership and commitment to doing the right thing, helping Clubs stand out as responsible and forward-thinking.

Together Greener Action Week
The Together Greener Action Week is an FAW campaign giving Clubs across Wales an opportunity to come together to celebrate football, raise awareness of sustainability and climate action, and take practical steps to make their Club greener.
The Together Greener Action Week is a week-long celebration of sustainability across Welsh football, taking place during the period designated each year for Wales Climate Week.
The Action Week is designed to be simple, flexible and accessible. There is no expectation that Clubs have to organise a major event or complete a long list of actions. Instead, we want Clubs to use the week as a moment to do something, talk about it and inspire others.

Core Principles
Together Greener is about taking practical action, but it is also about how those actions are planned, delivered and sustained over time. Alongside the six topic areas, the programme is underpinned by a small set of core principles that help Clubs take action more effectively, involve more people and create a lasting impact. These principles apply across everything within the Together Greener Programme and can be used in ways that work best for your Club and community.

Further Support
Becoming more sustainable is an ongoing journey for every Club. The Together Greener Programme has been developed to provide practical guidance, tools and ideas for Clubs that are just getting started, as well as those that are already taking action and looking to build on their progress.
