How Does The Programme Work?

Football in Wales is built on community. Our Clubs are places where people come together, learn, grow and belong. They are also places where small everyday decisions can make a real difference to our environment, our communities and future generations.

The FAW sustainability strategy underpins our vision for a global, local Cymru. It recognises that football has a responsibility, and a unique opportunity, to protect what we have today while helping to create a better tomorrow. This means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.

Sustainability is not about perfection or doing everything at once. It is about taking positive, practical action, big or small, and embedding long-term thinking into the way football operates at every level. From national teams to grassroots clubs, every part of the football ecosystem has a role to play.

Guided by the Well-being of Future Generations Wales Act and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the FAW is committed to improving Wales’ environmental, social, cultural and economic well-being. We want football to be a force for good locally and globally, inspiring positive change and supporting stronger, more resilient communities. Clubs sit at the heart of this ambition. They are trusted spaces, powered by volunteers, players and supporters who care deeply about their club and their community.

The Together Greener Programme has been created to support clubs in taking simple, effective sustainability actions that make sense for them, reduce their impact, save money where possible, and help build a more sustainable future for Welsh football.

Your First Steps

Before diving into the topic areas, it is important to create the right foundations within your Club. Clubs are most successful when sustainability is a shared effort, rather than the responsibility of one individual. Involving a small group of people helps spread the workload, bring in new ideas and build momentum.

Your first steps are to:

  1. Sign up for the Together Greener Programme.
  2. Bring together a small Together Greener Team.
  3. Set a small number of clear and achievable Green Goals (when ready).

This does not need to be formal or time-consuming. A Together Greener Team might be two or three people to begin with, including volunteers, players, parents or committee members. What matters is having people who care and are willing to take action.

Once your team is in place and you have agreed on your Green Goals, you will be ready to start working through the topic sections of the programme. Each topic will guide you through assessing your current situation, identifying priorities and taking action in a way that fits your Club.

What does ‘good’ look like for a Together Greener Club?

There is no single definition of success, and every Club will look different.

However, Clubs making good progress typically:

Have an active Together Greener Team in place.

Have agreed on a small number of Green Goals.

Have taken action in one or more topic areas.

Review progress at least once a year and update plans.

Step 1 – Sign Up As A FAW Together Greener Club

Signing up as a FAW Together Greener Club is the first step in joining a growing community of Clubs across Wales committed to taking positive sustainability action.

By signing up, your Club is confirming its intention to engage with the Together Greener Programme, take practical steps at a pace that works for you, and be part of a collective effort to create a more sustainable future for Welsh football.

Signing up allows the FAW to:

  • Share new guidance, resources and updates with your Club.
  • Highlight funding opportunities and relevant support.
  • Share learning, ideas and case studies from other Clubs.
  • Keep in touch about programme developments and future webinars, events and initiatives.

Signing up does not commit your Club to specific targets or actions. It simply helps us support you better and build a connected Together Greener network across the football community.

Once signed up, you can begin by building your Together Greener Team and setting your Green Goals.
